Holy City Zoo Comedy Club History Repeat?
San Francisco, CA April 19, 2002 - On Sunday May 5, 2002 San Francisco Comedy College latest comedians' class will have their graduation performance and the improv group Too Many Larrys! also make their public debut.

In the 70s and 80s, under the direction of producer John Cantu, the San Francisco comedy club, Holy City Zoo, produced some of the nation's top comedians Dana Carvey, Kevin Meany, Paula Poundstone, Bobby Slayton, Rob "Defending the Caveman" Becker, Nora Dunn, Will Durst and literally hundreds more. http://HumorMall.com/wwwboard/hcz.shtml

Today, Kurtis Mathews runs the San Francisco Comedy College which is today's equivalent of the Holy City Zoo - the training ground for budding comics, producing today's comedy stars of the future. http://sfcomedycollege.com/index2a.html

In the 70s and 80s, the Holy City Zoo house improv troupe, Papaya Juice produced Robin Williams, Barry Sobel, Buzz Belmondo, Gil Christner, and other improv actors that now appear regularly on television, in movies, and as guests on the many and varied talk shows.

Today Cantu is co-founder, with improv actress, Karen Warner, and artistic director for San Francisco's newest improv sketch comedy troupe, Too Many Larrys! Cantu and Warner have put together a group of people with a wide range of improv experience in other improv troupes:

Joan Carter (Gefilte Fishheads), Jim Cranna (Founder of Theater of the Deranged and The Committee cast member), Ann Frehan (Women Who Laugh Too Much), Jeff Kreisler (Cultural Vacuum), Nick Leonard (Dojo Fabulosa), Stephanie Mulligan (actress), Katherine Murphy (Actor-director for Bare Bones Theatre), Grace Sargent (Lunatic Fringe), Aaron Task (The Adults Playground) and Karen Warner (Improv Actress).

John Cantu says, "Right now, the only venue that comes close to recreating the magic of the Holy City Zoo" is the San Francisco Comedy School. That's why I love the parallel of new comics and a new improv troupe, just like the old 'Zoo'.
